Mike is the loner. He gets good grades and his appearance is nondescript (he doesn't care what he wears), but he is naturally attractive. He's known to be a jerk because he never, ever lies.
Nicky is the emo, but in looks rather than personality. He's popular, loves parties and drinking, and has a thing for jocks. He's known for sleeping around.
When Nicky was young he went to see a carnival fortune teller who told him he'd meet his soul mate by getting stuck with them in an elevator. Ever since then he gets nervous on elevators. Finally one day at school he gets stuck on the elevator with none other than friendless, serious, grouchy, 'Loner Mike'. "Sorry, it's going to take at least an hour for the repair man to get you out," said the secretary through the elevator speaker, "so sit tight." Nicky sighed, glancing at Mike. "Well, we have an hour. What do you wanna do?" "Study," Mike said, slipping to the floor and opening a book. Nicky sidles up to him. "Really? Because I think there's something else we should do." Mike pauses his reading without looking up. "No thanks." After that incident, Nicky loses all faith in fortune telling and destiny, and a year goes by before fate brings them together again. The following year in their boarding school dorm, Nicky and Mike get rooms across the hall from one another. One day Nicky stumbles home totally wasted and since no one else is awake, Mike decides he could use some help. He holds back Nicky's hair while he throws up, and listens to his sob story about how almost anyone will sleep with him but no one will get serious with him. "Do you think I'm a slut?" Nicky asks as Mike helps him into his bed. "Yeah, a little." "I'm sorry." "What for?" "For screwing everything up. You know, I wish things were different, I wish I hadn't been so stupid in the elevator." Mike looks curious then. "What do you mean?" "Like, I didn't wanna just, you know, mess around, but I don't know how to ask for something normal. Come on! You get stuck in an elevator and ask somebody if they wanna go on a date?" "Well asking them to have sex isn't exactly normal." "I'm sorry." "Stop apologizing." "Will you stay?" Nick asks, grabbing onto Mike's arm. "I'm not having sex with you." "Just sleep," Nicky murmurs. Mike sighs and lays on the bed, Nicky curling up beside him.
